Calculation methodology

Compacted volume and mass

Volume in cubic metres equals plan area in square metres multiplied by compacted installed depth in millimetres divided by 1,000. Placed mass in metric tonnes equals volume multiplied by compacted density in metric tonnes per cubic metre.

Ordered mass equals placed mass multiplied by one plus the ordering allowance percentage divided by 100. No extra compaction multiplier is applied to this mass.

Worked example

80 m² at 50 mm and 2.4 metric tonnes/m³ gives 4 m³ and 9.6 metric tonnes placed. A 5% ordering allowance gives 10.08 metric tonnes to order. These are examples, not recommended construction specifications.

Units and rounding

One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. One US short ton is exactly 0.90718474 metric tonnes. Quantity results round half up to three decimal places; intermediate calculations retain precision.

Scope and limitations

Plan area is a horizontal projection. Sloping and irregular surfaces require a contractor's review. Density, depth, waste and suitability must be confirmed independently. This tool provides no structural, drainage or surveying assessment.
