Comparing driveway surfaces before you request a quote
Compare complete systems
Compare the proposed construction, drainage design, appearance and future care together. A surface name alone does not define a driveway specification. Ask each supplier or installer to explain the system suitable for the intended use and site conditions.
Asphalt
Record the proposed mixture, layers, compacted depths, edge details and access arrangements. For estimating, calculate each specified layer separately and confirm the density and selling unit with the supplier. Do not assume all asphalt surfaces are permeable.
Block paving
Identify the actual product, pattern, laying arrangement and pack coverage. Include borders and cuts in the ordering assessment. If permeability is required, ask for a complete compatible system rather than assuming ordinary blocks and conventional bedding satisfy that requirement.
Concrete
Ask for the proposed construction specification, surface finish, joints and curing arrangements. Record how access will be managed during the work and when use can resume according to the specified system. Obtain project-specific advice rather than using a universal thickness or reopening time.
Gravel
Define the aggregate, containment, supporting construction and intended maintenance. Ask how migration, entrances and the relationship with adjacent surfaces will be managed. Price the complete preparation and edging scope, not just the delivered aggregate.
A comparison sheet to take to the visit
For every option, write down product reference, construction reference, drainage approach, appearance, included preparation, maintenance instructions, proposed programme and total price. Ask for the manufacturer’s current documentation. Compare matched scopes before deciding which option meets your priorities.
