How much does a driveway cost?

Build the price from the work

A driveway price depends on the area, existing construction, proposed surface, access and associated work. Start with a measured scope and a cost schedule. A national price per square metre cannot tell you what excavation, drainage or disposal your site requires.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Ask whether each quotation includes removal, excavation, disposal, the specified layers, edging, covers, drainage, delivery and cleanup. Record differences before comparing totals. A cheaper quote may cover less work rather than offer the same job for less money.

Worked example: fixed costs change the area rate

Suppose an illustrative estimate has £800 of setup and delivery costs plus £60 per square metre of other costs. At 40 m² the cost basis is £3,200, or £80/m². At 80 m² it is £5,600, or £70/m². These invented figures demonstrate fixed-cost allocation; they are not current market prices. Pricing adjustments and applicable tax still need separate consideration.

Questions that change the estimate

Can delivery vehicles reach the work? How far must materials be moved? What existing material must be removed? Is drainage designed and included? Are edges, steps or covers being altered? Which product and installation specification are being priced? Resolve these questions before treating a headline area rate as a firm quote.

Keep assumptions visible

Save the quantity, supplier rate and scope behind the customer price. Identify anything awaiting inspection or confirmation. If the customer changes the material or extent, revise the complete estimate rather than changing only the surface-material line.
