How to calculate paving blocks and packs

Use the supplier’s stated pack coverage

Start with the checked net area. Apply a separately chosen allowance, divide by the supplier’s coverage per pack and round up to the next whole pack. This is a coverage calculation; confirm pack composition and pattern compatibility separately.

Worked example

For 47 m² with an illustrative 7% allowance, the required coverage is 50.29 m². If the selected pack covers 8.5 m², divide 50.29 by 8.5 to get 5.916 packs. Ordering whole packs means six packs, covering 51 m². That leaves 0.71 m² above the allowance-adjusted requirement, or 4 m² above the net area.

When individual block counts help

For a simple single-size layout, area divided by nominal module area can help check a count. Actual coverage depends on the product’s dimensions and joint arrangement. Mixed-size packs and patterns require the supplier’s layout information. Do not treat a generic block count as a verified order.

Keep borders separate

Measure borders separately when they use another product. Avoid including the border area in both the main field and the border order. Record linear metres where appropriate, and confirm how the edging product is sold.

Check before ordering

Confirm product code, colour, pack coverage, available quantities, delivery arrangements and your cutting allowance. Full-pack rounding is separate from waste. The calculator below reports both so you can explain the difference.
